Sedex Members Ethical Trade Audit (SMETA) is one of the most widely used ethical audit formats in the world. SMETA offers robust ethical audits to guide companies on selecting suppliers that work in an ethical manner. Its four-pillar methodology facilitates high-quality audits around Labor, Health & Safety, Environment and Business Ethics. The audits are designed as a cost-effective solution for suppliers to share with any customer, avoiding duplication. The impact of COVID-19 on business and workers has been severe and created a significant split for businesses and workers in different sectors. The majority of businesses across multiple sectors and countries are experiencing a total change in business realities. In all businesses, worker health and/or economic security will are impacted.

CONTEXT SEDEX has introduced Sedex Virtual Assessment (SVA), solution to provide remote assessments of sites and workplaces. Sedex Virtual Assessment is aligned with SMETA, aiming to provide as much insight into working conditions at a site as possible. Following a thorough planning stage, auditors lead a virtual site tour through the use of video technology, as well as an examination of the site’s management systems and documentation. Not all of Sedex’s Affiliate Audit Companies (AACs) are authorised to conduct Sedex Virtual Assessments. Bureau Veritas is one of the first and limited AACs approved by SEDEX to start supporting industries through this SEDEX Virtual Assessment.
